"Stroke for Stroke" - the way to raise money

During the course of 2010, members at Taunton Vale Golf Club raised £864 for the Captain’s Charity – the Stroke Association.  On Wednesday 2 March, past Captain John Beer presented a cheque for this amount to Stephen Chesworth, Stroke Association Regional Fundraising Manager (South West).

The money was raised by various means including small fines in the clubhouse and asking members to pay £1 on a “stroke for stroke’ basis. If members took a “penalty” stroke during their round, they were asked to remember those less fortunate for whom stroke is the real “penalty” and contribute something in the charity bottle in the bar.  Similarly, when their handicap went up, or down, during the year, they were asked to contribute £1 for each stroke. Using a mobile phone in the clubhouse also incurred a £1 fine in the charity bottle.

Last years Club captain John Beer said: “Taunton Vale Golf Club raises thousands of pounds for different charities each year. I wanted to support the Stroke Association because we all know someone who has had a Stroke, and my daughter was working for the charity in London”.

On behalf of the Stroke Association, Stephen Chesworth said:

“We are grateful to John Beer for nominating the Stroke Association as his Club Captain’s charity for the year.   We’d like to thank John and all the members of the Taunton Vale Golf Club for their excellent fundraising efforts and for raising a magnificent £864 for the charity.”
